Dino Formaggio and the philosophy of art

Nine augmented reality lessons to emancipate the archive from the shelves

The “AN-ICON” project and the Philosophy Library have organized a tribute to Dino Formaggio, a prominent figure in the “Piero Martinetti” Department, to celebrate the Centennial of Milan State University. The project includes recordings of Formaggio’s lectures, now available online, that highlight his passion for manual labor, artistic practices, and his ability to engage students.

Using an augmented reality pathway, students can listen to fragments of his lectures via QR codes placed near books cited by Formaggio at the University’s Philosophy Library. The activators give access to nine chapters that, while not exhausting the richness of his lectures, give a vivid impression of them. Encounters with the professor can also take place in an entirely unexpected way, by discovering within a volume placed elsewhere a bookmark that refers back to the project, thus allowing one to visualize the dense web of thought that links the author to the history of philosophy and the Library’s collection. Augmented reality proves to be a method that is as simple as it is effective in emancipating the archive from the shelves, transforming it into an expanded space to be traversed.
